Frontera Produce Launches Melon Import Program
EDINBURG, TEXAS -- September 20, 2005
(Edinburgh, TX) --- Frontera Produce announces a new melon import program into the Port of Corpus Christi to begin operations in November 2005, shipping to retailers and wholesale distributors throughout the U.S.
Frontera will be importing cantaloupe and honeydew from Guatemala through Altobaso, S.A., contracting 2,400 tons per week for the duration of the season running November to May. "There were several factors that influenced our decision to select this port. Other Gulf ports were considered; however, the Port of Corpus Christi offered a strategic location with accessible rail and highway transportation, an on-dock facility, and cold storage that was not only clean, but food safe – a very important factor in our decision. "We anticipate this trial season to run very smoothly and hope to add mangos to the cantaloupes and honeydews for the 2006/2007 season," said Will Steele, Vice President and Partner.
The Port of Corpus Christi cold storage facilities are a state-of-the-art, 100,000 square foot refrigerated warehouse on the Texas Gulf Coast. The Port offers enclosed temperature-controlled loading docks, in a foreign trade zone, a short 60-foot from storage. From this strategic location, the port serves domestic and international markets with excellent maritime, rail, and highway connections.
